To find an elevator’s Certificate of Compliance for a particular annual cycle in Arlington County, Virginia, open that cycle’s REN renewal record in Permit Arlington, then go to Record Info → Attachments. The County’s Elevator Permit instructions say the certificate becomes available after the PIE/PIEE passes its annual inspection. An old parent record or an elevator installation permit does not by itself show this year’s certificate.
Follow the PIE or PIEE number into the right year
The County migrated older Periodic Inspection Elevator records into Permit Arlington as legacy PIE records that retain numbers such as PIE1234. New periodic-inspection records use PIEE numbers, for example PIEE22-12345. The annual renewal adds a suffix such as -REN1; the suffix increases with later cycles. Use the parent number to find the equipment’s record family, then select the renewal for the year you need. The County says each renewal tracks that year’s inspection cycle.
- Start at the County’s Elevator Permit page and follow its Permit Arlington route. If you are the authorized record holder, log in and open My Records.
- Find the PIE or PIEE parent and identify the matching REN renewal. For a legacy PIE that is not linked to your account, the County’s link procedure requires the record number and PIN from its mailed invoice. If the PIN is missing, use the Inspection Services Division contact on the County page; do not guess a code or assume any visitor can link a record.
- On the relevant renewal, choose Record Info → Attachments to look for the Certificate of Compliance. If you need the inspection outcome or comments instead, the County gives a separate Record Info → Inspections → Completed → View Details → View Result Comments path.
The inspection result and the certificate are related but distinct. The certificate follows a passed annual inspection. A scheduled visit, payment, parent PIE entry or renewal number alone is not a passed result. Our inspection status guide explains why the stage matters when reading a permit history, though Arlington’s elevator certificate has its own County process.
A displayed certificate date may need correction
The County currently warns that Permit Arlington can display incorrect Issued and Expiration dates for PIE/PIEE Certificates of Compliance. The County says to pay the fee, pass inspection, then email its elevator staff with the PIE number or property address to correct the dates. If the attachment’s dates do not match the cycle you expected, follow that official correction route instead of treating the display as conclusive. Check the actual renewal and inspection history first; a date correction is not a substitute for an inspection.
For an annual cycle that has not yet produced a certificate, use the County’s renewal and inspection instructions rather than hunting the installation permit. Its page says the fee must be paid before an inspection can be scheduled and that the certificate appears only after the annual inspection passes. If the needed REN record is absent from an authorized account, ask the Inspection Services Division which record association or cycle is missing. An empty personal My Records view does not establish that the conveyance has no County history. Our permit search with no result guide discusses that general evidence limit.
If you are not the linked account holder or need an older certificate, ask the Inspection Services Division which record can be supplied for the PIE/PIEE number and year. The County’s Records Research + Requests guide also describes public research kiosks at the Permit Arlington Center and a County FOIA request route when a record cannot be found there. Give the County the equipment’s known PIE/PIEE number, property address and target year; request the particular certificate or inspection record, subject to its access rules. The kiosk guide documents address, permit number and RPC searches for general records. Ask staff whether the certificate for your equipment and year is held in that collection; the guide does not establish complete historical elevator-certificate coverage.
How Arlington’s annual elevator cycle runs
Knowing the County’s calendar helps you tell which certificate year you’re looking at. According to the County’s Elevator Permit page, each certificate is annual and expires on the 28th day of a set month, and that month and day don’t change for the equipment. The County mails the Notice of Required Certification and Invoice 90 days before expiration, and a new REN renewal is created each cycle.
- The periodic inspection is done by the County’s third-party elevator inspections contractor, which sets the official date. The date picked in Permit Arlington is only a preference.
- The annual fee covers one initial inspection and one reinspection. A late cancellation (under 24 hours), no access, or missing required parties counts as a rejected inspection and uses up both.
- A temporary use certificate is a separate item, valid for 90 days from approval. Don’t read it as the annual certificate.
- Installing or altering an elevator, escalator or hoist needs a separate Elevator Permit, so an installation record won’t show an annual cycle.

If you file a FOIA request
The County’s FOIA Requests page says it responds within five working days and can take up to seven more if it notifies you in writing. If the estimated cost is $200 or more, you’ll get an estimate and a 50% deposit is required before records are retrieved. You can ask for an estimate up front. Requests go to foiaofficer@arlingtonva.us or 703-228-0720.
